RESUMO

Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CHD) is a primary cardiovascular disease caused by atherosclerosis (AS), which is characterized by chronic inflammation and lipid oxidative deposition. Molecular hydrogen (H2) is an effective anti-inflammatory agent and has potential to ameliorate glycolipid metabolism disorders, which is believed to exert beneficial effects on the prevention and treatment of CHD. It is suggested that H2 reduces inflammation in CHD by regulating multiple pathways, including NF-κB inflammatory pathway, pyroptosis, mitophagy, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and Nrf2 antioxidant pathway. Additionally, H2 may improve glycolipid metabolism by mediation of PI3K and AMPK signalling pathways, contributing to inhibition of the occurrence and development of CHD. This review elaborates pathogenesis of CHD and evaluates the role of H2 in CHD. Moreover, possible molecular mechanisms have been discussed and speculated, aiming to provide more strategies and directions for subsequent studies of H2 in CHD.

Adequate dietary L-tryptophan (Trp) governs intestinal homeostasis in piglets. However, the defensive role of Trp in the diet against enterotoxigenic E. coli F4 (K88) in pigs is still poorly understood. Here, sixty (6.15 ± 1.52 kg, 24-day-old, Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) weaned piglets were used for an E. coli F4 attack test in a 2 × 2 factorial design. The growth (ADG, ADFI, GH), immune factors (IL-10, IgA, IgG, IgM), Trp metabolite 5-HT, intestinal morphology (jejunal and colonic VH), mRNA expression of ß-defensins (jejunal BD-127, BD-119, ileal BD-1, BD-127), and abundance of beneficial microorganisms in the colon (Prevotella 9, Lactobacillus, Phascolarctobacterium, Faecalibacterium) were higher in the piglets in the HT (High Trp) and HTK (High Trp, K88) groups than in the LT (Low Trp) and LTK (Low Trp, K88) groups (P < 0.05), while FCR, diarrhea rate, diarrhea index, serum Trp, Kyn, IDO, D-LA, ET, and abundance of harmful microorganisms in the colon (Spirochaetes, Fusobacteria, Prevotella, Christensenellaceae R7) were lower in the HT and HTK groups than in the LT and LTK groups (P < 0.05). High Trp reduced the expression of virulence genes (K88 and LT) after E. coli F4 attack (P < 0.05). The IL-6, TNF-α was lower in the HTK group than in the LT, LTK group (P < 0.05). In short, a diet containing 0.35% Trp protected piglets from enterotoxigenic E. coli F4 (K88) via Trp metabolism promoting BD expression in the intestinal mucosa, which improved growth and intestinal health.

The mechanisms of how host-microbe mutualistic relationships are established at weaning contingently upon B-cell surveillance remain inadequately elucidated. We found that CD138+ plasmacyte (PC)-mediated promotion of IgA response regulates the symbiosis between Bacteroides uniformis (B. uniformis) and the host during the weaning period. The IgA-skewed response of CD138+ PCs is essential for B. uniformis to occupy a defined gut luminal niche, thereby fostering stable colonization. Furthermore, B. uniformis within the natural gut niche was perturbed in the absence of IgA, resulting in exacerbated gut inflammation in IgA-deficient mice and weaned piglets. Thus, we propose that the priming and maintenance of intestinal IgA response from CD138+ PCs are required for host-microbial symbiosis, whereas the perturbation of which would enhance inflammation in weaning process.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer progression and treatment response are significantly influenced by the tumor microenvironment (TME). Traditional methods for assessing TME are invasive, posing a challenge for patient care. This study introduces a non-invasive approach to TME classification by integrating radiomics and machine learning, aiming to predict the TME status using imaging data, thereby aiding in prognostic outcome prediction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Utilizing multi-omics data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA), this study employed CIBERSORT and MCP-counter algorithms analyze immune infiltration in breast cancer. A radiomics classifier was developed using a random forest algorithm, leveraging quantitative features extracted from intratumoral and peritumoral regions of Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) scans. The classifer's ability to predict diverse TME states were and their prognostic implications were evaluated using Kaplan-Meier survival curves. RESULTS: Three distinct TME states were identified using RNA-Seq data, each displaying unique prognostic and biological characteristics. Notably, patients with increased immune cell infiltration showed significantly improved prognoses (P < 0.05). The classifier, comprising 24 radiomic features, demonstrated high predictive accuracy (AUC of training set = 0.960, 95 % CI: 0.922, 0.997; AUC of testing set = 0.853, 95 % CI: 0.687, 1.000) in differentiating these TME states. Predictions from the classifier also correlated significantly with overall patient survival (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study offers a detailed analysis of the complex TME states in breast cancer and presents a reliable, noninvasive radiomics classifier for TME assessment. The classifer's accurate prediction of TME status and its correlation with prognosis highlight its potential as a tool in personalized breast cancer treatment, paving the way for more individualized and less invasive therapeutic strategies.

Individuals of the general public can perform both consumer and citizen roles in farm animal welfare, and attitudes toward farm animal welfare may differ between these roles. However, scant research is available regarding this distinction, especially in developing countries such as China. The present study aimed to explore consumer-citizen gaps in Chinese public attitudes toward farm animal welfare across three dimensions and across demographic characteristics. A 36-item scale was designed, and completed by 5284 Chinese participants in a large-scale cross-sectional survey. Consumer-citizen gaps in attitudes toward farm animal welfare across three dimensions and demographic characteristics were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and effects of demographic characteristics on attitudes were further explored by linear regression analysis. A significant consumer-citizen gap was found in overall attitudes, although the consumer role was only slightly more positive than the citizen role. The consumer-citizen gap is driven by differences in both cognitive attitudes and behavioral attitudes. The gap is most pronounced in cognitive attitudes, where the consumer role is significantly more positive, and smaller in behavioral attitudes, where the citizen role is significantly more positive. The consumer-citizen gap varies significantly among different demographic groups, including gender, age, education, monthly household income, area of residence, and occupation. Additionally, education, monthly household income, and area of residence have significant effects on attitudes in the dual role, whereas gender only affect consumer-role attitudes significantly. The findings provide evidence that consumer-citizen gaps in Chinese public attitudes toward farm animal welfare exist, and this distinction is mainly determined by demographic characteristics.

The bound states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted much attention in designing metasurface due to their high Q-factor and effectiveness in suppressing radiational loss. Here we report on the realization of the third harmonic generation (THG) at a near-ultraviolet wavelength (343 nm) via accidental BICs in a metasurface. The absolute conversion efficiency of the THG reaches 1.13 × 10-5 at a lower peak pump intensity of 0.7 GW/cm2. This approach allows the generation of an unprecedentedly high nonlinear conversion efficiency with simple structures.

Probiotic intervention is a well-established approach for replacing antibiotics in the management of weaning piglet diarrhea, which involves a large number of complex systems interacting with the gut microbiota, including the endocannabinoid system; nevertheless, the specific role of the endocannabinoid system mediated by probiotics in the piglet intestine has rarely been studied. In this study, we used antibiotics (ampicillin) to perturb the intestinal microbiota of piglets. This resulted in that the gene expression of the intestinal endocannabinoid system was reprogrammed and the abundance of probiotic Lactobacillus johnsonii in the colon was lowered. Moreover, the abundance of Lactobacillus johnsonii was positively correlated with colonic endocannabinoid system components (chiefly diacylglycerol lipase beta) via correlation analysis. Subsequently, we administered another batch of piglets with Lactobacillus johnsonii. Interestingly, dietary Lactobacillus johnsonii effectively alleviated the diarrhea ratio in weaning piglets, accompanied by improvements in intestinal development and motility. Notably, Lactobacillus johnsonii administration enhanced the intestinal barrier function of piglets as evidenced by a higher expression of tight junction protein ZO-1, which might be associated with the increased level in colonic diacylglycerol lipase beta. Taken together, the dietary Lactobacillus johnsonii-mediated reprogramming of the endocannabinoid system might function as a promising target for improving the intestinal health of piglets.

Fat is one of the three macronutrients and a significant energy source for piglets. It plays a positive role in maintaining intestinal health and improving production performance. During the weaning period, physiological, stress and diet-related factors influence the absorption of fat in piglets, leading to damage to the intestinal barrier, diarrhea and even death. Signaling pathways, such as fatty acid translocase (CD36), pregnane X receptor (PXR), and AMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK), are responsible for regulating intestinal fat uptake and maintaining intestinal barrier function. Therefore, this review mainly elaborates on the reasons for diarrhea induced by insufficient fat absorption and related signaling pathways in weaned-piglets, with an emphasis on the intestinal fat absorption disorder. Moreover, we focus on introducing nutritional strategies that can promote intestinal fat absorption in piglets with insufficient fat absorption-related diarrhea, such as lipase, amino acids, and probiotics.

BACKGROUND: Maintenance therapy (MT) for recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer remains non-standardized. This study assessed MT effectiveness using a comprehensive approach and identifies prognosis factors inpatients with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer. METHODS: From January 2019 and December 2021, over 6000 patients from six Chinese institutions were retrospectively examined. Patients had recurrent/metastatic cervical cancer and underwent first-line chemotherapy with or without MT. We calculated overall and progression-free survival using Kaplan-Meier analysis, comparing via log-rank test, and conducted Cox regression for prognostic factors. RESULTS: Overall, 274 patients were stratified into an MT group (n = 77) and a non-MT group (n = 197). The 3-year OS rates were 52.5 % and 28.0 % for the MT and non-MT groups, respectively. The MT group had significantly enhanced median OS (37 vs. 21 months; HR, 0.43; 95 % CI, 0.30-0.61; P < 0.001) and PFS (21 vs. 14 months; HR, 0.65; 95 % CI, 0.47-0.90; P = 0.014) compared with the non-MT group. No significant differences in efficacy were observed among the various MT regimens, whether PD-1 monoclonal antibody, targeted therapeutic agents, or a combination of both. Extended PFS and OS were observed in patients receiving > 8 MT cycles. Multivariate analyses revealed that oligometastasis, MT, exclusive prior surgery (as opposed to combined surgery and radiotherapy), and extended interval before recurrence were independent OS predictors (P = 0.045, P < 0.001, P = 0.010, and P = 0.005, respectively); oligometastasis, concurrent radiotherapy, MT, and extended interval before recurrence were independent PFS predictors (P = 0.004, P = 0.007, P = 0.009, and P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: The MT integration markedly extended PFS and OS in patients diagnosed with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that can impact the central nervous system (CNS) and cause damage to the myelin, which is responsible for facilitating the normal transmission of electrical impulses along the nerves. We performed a bibliometric analysis of the scientific publications on myelin imaging in MS to reveal the development trends in this field and to evaluate research trends in myelin imaging in MS. Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection was searched for articles related to myelin imaging in MS published between January 2000 and December 2022. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and R language were used to evaluate and visualize contributions by and co-occurrence relationships among countries and institutions, authors, journals, citations, keywords, and so on. Results: A total of 1,639 articles addressed the topic of myelin imaging in MS. The United States had the largest number of annual publications. The University of London was the institution with the highest number of publications (n=118) and citations (n=9,885). The top 3 productive authors were all from the University of British Columbia in Canada. An article published by Mackay et al. in 1994 had the most citations (n=272). Neuroimage [impact factor (IF) =7.40, Journal Citation Reports quartile 1 (Q1)] was the most productive journal in terms of the number of articles relating to myelin imaging in MS (n=149). In recent years, myelin water imaging, synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (SyMRI), inhomogeneous magnetization, positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, and aquaporin-4 (AQP4) have been researched hotspots of myelin imaging in MS. Conclusions: With advancements in the pathophysiological research on myelin changes in MS, myelin imaging is playing an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of MS. In addition, the use of new sequences of myelin imaging to distinguish MS from other inflammatory demyelinating diseases is a future development trend in this field.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the mitral valve calcification and mitral structure detected by cardiac computed tomography (cardiac CT) and establish a scoring model based on cardiac CT and clinical factors to predict early good mitral valve repair (EGMR) and guide surgical strategy in rheumatic mitral disease (RMD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective bi-center cohort study. Based on cardiac CT, mitral valve calcification and mitral structure in RMD were quantified and evaluated. The primary outcome was EGMR. A logical regression algorithm was applied to the scoring model. RESULTS: A total of 579 patients were enrolled in our study from January 1, 2019, to August 31, 2022. Of these, 443 had baseline cardiac CT scans of adequate quality. The calcification quality score, calcification and thinnest part of the anterior leaflet clean zone, and papillary muscle symmetry were the independent CT factors of EGMR. Coronary artery disease and pulmonary artery pressure were the independent clinical factors of EGMR. Based on the above six factors, a scoring model was established. Sensitivity = 95% and specificity = 95% were presented with a cutoff value of 0.85 and 0.30 respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic of external validation set was 0.84 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.73-0.93). CONCLUSIONS: Mitral valve repair is recommended when the scoring model value > 0.85 and mitral valve replacement is prior when the scoring model value < 0.30. This model could assist in guiding surgical strategies for RMD. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The model established in this study can serve as a reference indicator for surgical repair in rheumatic mitral valve disease. KEY POINTS: • Cardiac CT can reflect the mitral structure in detail, especially for valve calcification. • A model based on cardiac CT and clinical factors for predicting early good mitral valve repair was established. • The developed model can help cardiac surgeons formulate appropriate surgical strategies.

Electrospun fibers have gained significant attention as scaffolds in skin tissue engineering due to their biomimetic properties, which resemble the fibrous extracellular matrix. The morphological characteristics of electrospun fibers play a crucial role in determining cell behavior. However, the effects of electrospun fibers' arrangement and diameters on human skin fibroblasts (HSFs) remain elusive. Here, we revealed the impact of electrospun fiber diameters (700 nm, 2000 nm, and 3000 nm) on HSFs' proliferation, migration, and functional expression. The results demonstrated that all fibers exhibited good cytocompatibility. HSFs cultured on nanofibers (700 nm diameter) displayed a more dispersed and elongated morphology. Conversely, fibers with a diameter of 3000 nm exhibited a reduced specific surface area and lower adsorption of adhesion proteins, resulting in enhanced cell migration speed and effective migration rate. Meanwhile, the expression levels of migration-related genes and proteins were upregulated at 48 h for the 3000 nm fibers. This study demonstrated the unique role of fiber diameters in controlling the physiological functions of cells, especially decision-making and navigating migration in complex microenvironments of aligned electrospun fibers, and highlights the utility of these bioactive substitutes in skin tissue engineering applications.

Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease, where molecular subtypes of breast cancer are closely related to the treatment and prognosis. Therefore, the goal of this work is to differentiate between luminal and non-luminal subtypes of breast cancer. The hierarchical radiomics network (HRadNet) is proposed for breast cancer molecular subtypes prediction based on dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. HRadNet fuses multilayer features with the metadata of images to take advantage of conventional radiomics methods and general convolutional neural networks. A two-stage training mechanism is adopted to improve the generalization capability of the network for multicenter breast cancer data. The ablation study shows the effectiveness of each component of HRadNet. Furthermore, the influence of features from different layers and metadata fusion are also analyzed. It reveals that selecting certain layers of features for a specified domain can make further performance improvements. Experimental results on three data sets from different devices demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed network. HRadNet also has good performance when transferring to other domains without fine-tuning.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish a MRI-based deep learning radiomics (DLR) signature to predict the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-low-positive status and further verified the difference in prognosis by the DLR model. METHODS: A total of 481 patients with breast cancer who underwent preoperative MRI were retrospectively recruited from two institutions. Traditional radiomics features and deep semantic segmentation feature-based radiomics (DSFR) features were extracted from segmented tumors to construct models separately. Then, the DLR model was constructed to assess the HER2 status by averaging the output probabilities of the two models. Finally, a Kaplan‒Meier survival analysis was conducted to explore the disease-free survival (DFS) in patients with HER2-low-positive status. The multivariate Cox proportional hazard model was constructed to further determine the factors associated with DFS. RESULTS: First, the DLR model distinguished between HER2-negative and HER2-overexpressing patients with AUCs of 0.868 and 0.763 in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. Furthermore, the DLR model distinguished between HER2-low-positive and HER2-zero patients with AUCs of 0.855 and 0.750, respectively. Cox regression analysis showed that the prediction score obtained using the DLR model (HR, 0.175; p = 0.024) and lesion size (HR, 1.043; p = 0.009) were significant, independent predictors of DFS. CONCLUSIONS: We successfully constructed a DLR model based on MRI to noninvasively evaluate the HER2 status and further revealed prospects for predicting the DFS of patients with HER2-low-positive status. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The MRI-based DLR model could noninvasively identify HER2-low-positive status, which is considered a novel prognostic predictor and therapeutic target. KEY POINTS: • The DLR model effectively distinguished the HER2 status of breast cancer patients, especially the HER2-low-positive status. • The DLR model was better than the traditional radiomics model or DSFR model in distinguishing HER2 expression. • The prediction score obtained using the model and lesion size were significant independent predictors of DFS.

This study aimed to determine the regulatory mechanism of dietary zinc lactate (ZL) supplementation on intestinal oxidative stress damage in a paraquat (PQ)-induced piglet model. Twenty-eight piglets (mean body weight 9.51 ± 0.23 kg) weaned at 28 d of age were randomly divided into control, ZL, PQ, and ZL + PQ groups (n = 7 in each group). The ZL-supplemented diet had little effect on growth performance under normal physiological conditions. However, under PQ challenge, ZL supplementation significantly improved average daily gain (P < 0.05) and reduced the frequency of diarrhea. ZL improved intestinal morphology and ultrastructure by significantly increasing the expression level of the jejunal tight junction protein, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) (P < 0.05), and intestinal zinc transport and absorption in PQ-induced piglets, which reduced intestinal permeability. ZL supplementation also enhanced the expression of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory factor-related genes and decreased inflammatory cytokine expression and secretion in PQ-induced piglets. Furthermore, ZL treatment significantly inhibited the activation of constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) signaling (P < 0.01) in PQ-induced piglets and altered the structure of the gut microbiota, especially by significantly increasing the abundance of beneficial gut microbes, including UCG_002, Ruminococcus, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Christensenellaceae_R_7_group, Treponema, unclassified_Christensenellaceae, and unclassified_Erysipelotrichaceae (P < 0.05). These data reveal that pre-administration of ZL to piglets can suppress intestinal oxidative stress by improving antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity and regulating the crosstalk between CAR signaling and gut microbiota.

One hundred and twenty-eight boars and gilts of the Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire variety with an initial body weight (BW) of 52.49 ± 0.48 kg were used in a randomized complete block design for a 63-day experiment. The four treatment groups were: control diet (CON), CON + 0.2% soybean oligosaccharides (SBOS), CON + 0.4% SBOS, and CON + 0.8% SBOS. The results showed that the average daily weight gain (ADG) was significantly higher in the 0.8% SBOS group than in the CON group on days 0-63 (p < 0.05). Compared with the CON group, adding 0.8% SBOS to the diet significantly increased the carcass weight, dressing percentage, and carcass lean percentage, but decreased the average backfat depth of growing-finishing pigs (p < 0.05). Adding different concentrations (0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.8%) of SBOS to the diet can significantly increase the concentrations of acetate, propionate, and butyrate in feces (p < 0.05). The activities of malic enzyme and fatty acid synthase in the 0.8% group were significantly lower than those in the 0.2% and CON groups (p < 0.05). In summary, 0.8% SBOS supplementation to growing-finishing pigs' diets can reduce lipid deposition and increase ADG.

Connecting different electronic devices is usually straightforward because they have paired, standardized interfaces, in which the shapes and sizes match each other perfectly. Tissue-electronics interfaces, however, cannot be standardized, because tissues are soft1-3 and have arbitrary shapes and sizes4-6. Shape-adaptive wrapping and covering around irregularly sized and shaped objects have been achieved using heat-shrink films because they can contract largely and rapidly when heated7. However, these materials are unsuitable for biological applications because they are usually much harder than tissues and contract at temperatures higher than 90 °C (refs. 8,9). Therefore, it is challenging to prepare stimuli-responsive films with large and rapid contractions for which the stimuli and mechanical properties are compatible with vulnerable tissues and electronic integration processes. Here, inspired by spider silk10-12, we designed water-responsive supercontractile polymer films composed of poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(ethylene glycol)-α-cyclodextrin inclusion complex, which are initially dry, flexible and stable under ambient conditions, contract by more than 50% of their original length within seconds (about 30% per second) after wetting and become soft (about 100 kPa) and stretchable (around 600%) hydrogel thin films thereafter. This supercontraction is attributed to the aligned microporous hierarchical structures of the films, which also facilitate electronic integration. We used this film to fabricate shape-adaptive electrode arrays that simplify the implantation procedure through supercontraction and conformally wrap around nerves, muscles and hearts of different sizes when wetted for in vivo nerve stimulation and electrophysiological signal recording. This study demonstrates that this water-responsive material can play an important part in shaping the next-generation tissue-electronics interfaces as well as broadening the biomedical application of shape-adaptive materials.

Early weaning of piglets was prone to increase reactive oxygen species, disrupt the redox balance, decrease antioxidant capacity, cause oxidative stress and intestinal oxidative damage, and lead to diarrhea in piglets. This research aimed to study dietary taurine (Tau) supplementation at a level relieving intestinal oxidative damage in early-weaned piglets. A total of 48 piglets were assigned to four groups of 12 individuals and fed a basal diet with 0.0% Tau (CON), 0.2% Tau (L-Tau), 0.3% Tau (M-Tau), or 0.4% Tau (H-Tau), respectively. The animal experiment lasted 30 days. The final weight, weight gain, average daily gain, and feed conversion rate increased with the increase in dietary Tau (Linear, p < 0.05; Quadratic p < 0.05), while the diarrhea index of piglets decreased with the increase in dietary Tau (Linear, p < 0.05). Serum malondialdehyde, nitric oxide (NO), D-lactose, and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) concentrations decreased with the increase in dietary Tau (Linear, p < 0.05). The O2•- and •OH clearance rate in serum, liver, and jejunum mucosa increased with the increase in dietary Tau (Linear, p < 0.05). Serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity, catalase (CAT) activity, and peroxidase (POD) activity and total antioxidant capacity increased with the increase in dietary Tau (Linear, p < 0.05). The serum glutathione (GSH) concentration and the ratio of GSH to GSSG increased with the increase in dietary Tau (Linear, p < 0.05). The POD and glutathione synthase activity in the liver and jejunum mucosa increased with the increase in dietary Tau (Linear, p < 0.05). The mRNA abundances of HO-1 and GPX1 in the H-Tau group were higher than that in the L-Tau, M-Tau, and CON groups (p < 0.05). The mRNA abundances of SOD1 and Nrf2 in the M-Tau and H-Tau groups were higher than in the L-Tau and CON groups (p < 0.05). The mRNA abundance of SOD2 in the L-Tau, M-Tau, and H-Tau groups was higher than in the CON group (p < 0.05). The VH and the ratio of VH to CD of jejunum and ileum increased with the increase in dietary Tau (Linear, p < 0.05). The mRNA abundances of occludens 1 and claudin 1 in the H-Tau group were higher than that in the CON, L-Tau, and M-Tau (p < 0.05). The mRNA abundance of occludin in the L-Tau, M-Tau, and H-Tau groups was higher than that in CON (p < 0.05). The abundance of Firmicutes increased with the increase in dietary Tau (Linear, p < 0.05), while Proteobacteria and Spirochaetota decreased with the increase in dietary Tau (Linear, p < 0.05). Collectively, dietary supplementation of 0.3% and 0.4% Tau in feed could significantly improve the growth performance and enhance the antioxidant capacity of piglets.

Farm animal welfare research conducted in China is not commonly accessed or known outside of China, which may lead to the assumption that farm animal welfare receives relatively little attention in China. Therefore, a bibliometric analysis was conducted on the existing Chinese farm animal welfare literature to provide robust evidence to refute this assumption. A total of 1312 peer-reviewed Chinese studies on farm animal welfare published between March 1992 and June 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database. CiteSpace software was used to analyze and visualize the number, species, authors, institutions, journals, and keywords of the papers. In China, farm animal welfare research has gone through the processes of an early stage (1992-2001), rapid-growth stage (2002-2007), and mature stage (2008-present), and the scale of research continues to grow. Notably, swine and chickens have received priority attention in this area. A Matthew effect was observed for authors and institutions, with relatively little collaboration among authors and institutions. Most of the papers were published in a small number of journals, with an apparent agglomeration characteristic. The research hotspots, summarized as "feed and diet", "environmental impacts and control", "integrated rearing management", "injury and disease", "behavior and technologies for behavior monitoring", "genetic analysis", "welfare during transport and slaughter", "welfare-friendly animal product consumption", "attitudes toward farm animal welfare", and "healthy breeding". The keywords "computer vision", "recognition", "temperature", "precision livestock farming", "laying hen", and "behavior", represent the major research frontiers in the field, which could indicate potential areas of significant future research. The findings of the present bibliometric analysis confirm the fact that farm animal welfare is a field of interest in China. Farm animal welfare research in China tends to be pragmatic, with a strong emphasis on enhancing growth and production performance, as well as product quality, rather than solely concentrating on improving farm animal welfare. This paper provides insightful references that researchers can use to identify and understand the current status and future direction of the farm animal welfare field in China.
